Job Description

Beyond Petrochemicals: People Over Pollution is seeking a Louisiana Organizer to support and help build a field program to address the build-out of the petrochemical industry and support the movement of grassroots advocates fighting for clean air and water.

Beyond Petrochemicals is transforming the US industrial sector, ensuring more local victories in the transition to a clean economy, supporting laws protecting communities from harm, and reducing the greenhouse gas emissions fueling the climate crisis.

The ideal candidate will be a community organizer and advocate who excels in bringing people together around a common cause. It will be someone who can spot opportunities for organizing deeper in our communities and is driven by data and metrics to measure results. The ideal candidate will also be someone based in or with experience organizing across Louisiana and, in particular, close to the Louisiana River Parishes between Baton Rouge and New Orleans.

POSITION SUMMARY 

A Louisiana Organizer for Beyond Petrochemicals supports implementation of the Regional Campaign Director’s priorities in their assigned region as follows (but not limited to); 
  • Build, cultivate, and maintain relationships with grassroots partners and local stakeholders to maximize results and build power towards our goals. 
  • Work alongside our partner organizations to empower community members to take action on the Campaign’s strategies and objectives.
  • Develop outreach strategies including creating materials, organizing events, and facilitating trainings and workshops. 
  • Identify and lift up community members who can represent the site interventions on the ground. 

LOCATION

This position is primarily based in the River Parishes area of Louisiana. The ideal candidate would be located out of the New Orleans area or one of the River Parishes but other areas will be considered.

Beyond Petrochemicals is a fiscally sponsored project of the Resources Legacy Fund (RLF), launched in September 2022 by Bloomberg Philanthropies after seeing unprecedented growth in the petrochemical industry, which contributes to climate change and its detrimental impact on the health of the communities. 

Drawing on the success of Bloomberg’s Beyond Coal and Beyond Carbon campaigns, Beyond Petrochemicals is turbocharging existing efforts led by frontline communities to address the expansion of more than 120 proposed petrochemical projects concentrated in three target geographies – Louisiana, Texas, and the Ohio River Valley. Beyond Petrochemicals is also working to establish stricter rules for existing petrochemical plants to safeguard the health of American communities.

Strong candidates will offer:

  • One to three years of professional experience organizing in community advocacy, campaigns, or non-profit program work. 
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, cross-cultural awareness and the ability to work collaboratively with people from diverse backgrounds and cultures.
  • Demonstrated ability to move people to action and build a mutual sense of trust.
  • Ability to work with a cross-section of people, such as community members, grassroots leaders, and non-profit staff.
  • Ability to synthesize information from multiple sources into clear, cohesive written and visual products. 
  • Understanding of the state's political and environmental landscapes.
  • Ability to travel regularly both within the region and to campaign related gatherings(as needed); ability to work some weekend and night hours when necessary. Access to a reliable, personal vehicle is required.
  • Bachelor’s degree is optional. An equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.

Benefits

Compensation and Benefits: Salary of $65,000 - 70,000, commensurate with experience. RLF offers an alternate Fridays off work schedule (employees work 40 hours one week, 32 hours the next week) and a comprehensive benefit package including medical, dental, and vision insurance, 401k plan with a 5% match, mileage for work travel and generous paid time off. RLF also offers a technology allowance, student loan repayment assistance, the Calm app, mental health benefits and approximately 17 paid holidays per year.
